JRC Reuben Heaton Scales Review - 01 November 2006 - Back

JRC Reuben Heaton Scales Review

A look at the popular JRC Reuben Heaton Scales. Do they measure up to full price Reubens??

When it comes to angling scales for big carp angling there is no doubt that Reuben Heaton's are the daddies. But they are of course pretty expensive, at around ?90. JRC obviously spotted a niche for slightly cheaper but still well constructed scales and the JRC Reubens were born.

Unlike the more expensive Reubens the JRC scales work in 2oz divisions so if you are ultra picky on accuracy you may prefer to pay for full price versions. However to be honest given the carp can shed ounces in bait from either end during weighing etc. I've always believed an ounce here or there to be pretty insignificant. I tend to err on the side lower side of caution watching the needle, it's a personal thing after all.

I have been using a set of these for a couple of years now and have to say all in all have no complaints. They compare pretty equally accuracy wise with other scales have used, and the face and dial is easy to read and clear. The body has sustained no damage other then minor scratching through normal use and have no qualms there. The weigh hook and eye are both robust stainless so give no cause for concern either. The adjustment knob is large enough to not be fiddly and smooth enough. Needle bouce is no more then comparable scales.

If I were a rich man I may splash out on the full price Reuben Scales but to be honest for the average angler like meself see no real need. All in all a good keenly priced product, around ?45, which does what it says on the tin. 8/10
