Carp Society takes steps to protect Horseshoe from KHV - 29 July 2006 - Back

With the earlier EA news that KHV has reared it's ugly head on a number of UK venues the Carp Society has taken steps to minimising the risk

As reported previously the EA and CEFAS have reported the outbreak of the deadly Koi Herpes Virus on a number of southern waters. This has led the Carp Society, who own and run Horseshoe Lake, to take positive steps in preventing the spread of disease to the lake with possible devastating consequences to it's stocks of carp.

Firstly they have banned the use of carp sacks from all of their venues including the Horseshoe lake, and secondly all anglers are now required to loan a Net, Mat and weigh sling for their visit to the water, with effect from the 1st of August

Whilst this is a disease which poses most risk to waters with a larger turnover such as day ticket waters it is still a huge risk to any water so a timely reminder of the need to dry thoroughly, and preferably disinfect, all nets, slings, mats and sacks between fishing different venues. It only takes one mistake to potentially destroy a water. It is also a pointer to the dangers of introducing, or moving fish into waters without proper EA clearance and health checks.
