Shimano Exage AX STC Specimen - Long Range - 23 October 2007 - Back

Kevin puts this 6 piece travel rod through it's paces on a trip to Canada.

Below is a description as it appears on the Fishing warehouse website:

"Redesigned to higher specification, this latest version of the popular carp travel rod is now lighter, stiffer and considerably thinner. Packing down to suitcase size pieces it affords the serious holiday specimen hunter a trouble free opportunity to get through airport check ins without the usual cumbersome problems of long rod sections and ski flight protection tubes.
Available in two test curves 2.75lb and 3lb both can be assembled to 12' to suit all situations, home and abroad. The AX is fitted with minimal reel seat and duplon front and rear grips - with Shimano Lite rings - both models look exceptionally "carpy"."

I bought two of theses rod (2.75 tc) for a trip to Canada. Being a little unsure of what to expect from a travel rod, I took thing gently at first. They appeared well finished, all the joints fixing together very well. They come in six 2 foot lengths, assembling to 12 foot. The makers supply a cloth bag as well as a stiff tube to help protect the rods when travelling.

When slotted together the rod feels suprisingly light, I think its this light feeling that made me unsure of how they would handle an angry Canadian carp!!

But within seconds of hooking my first carp it was clear they were more than capable of handling any carp.

They cast well, although I did not do any long range casting with them, as all the carp were margin caught. I’ll update you on how they handle longer ranges when I get a chance to try them out at range (not that they are out and out long range rods), but I’m sure they will manage a longish chuck.

By the end of the weeks fishing I had enjoyed using the rods so much that I decided to carry on using them back home in the uk. Mainly because they pack down into two foot lengths and I would be able to store in my carryall. So doing away with the need for a six foot long holdall, this means all the tackle stays out of sight in the back of the 4x4!!

I would recommend these rod to anyone flying abroad, as they pack into a suitcase with ease. Or anyone who needs a little more space in the car.
